Hygge at the Summer House.

My family has a summer house in Denmark, a place that feels deeply rooted in my Danish heritage (something which genuinely has inspired me with Huglig). Whenever we are there, we slow down and embrace hygge in its purest sense - long sunny afternoons spent playing croquet on the lawn (it gets very competitive), summer barbecues outdoors, and family dinners where I love to arrange a beautiful table with seasonal, local, or foraged flowers and foliage (such as Sunflowers). It’s a place that feels especially meaningful, where connection, comfort, and simple joys are woven into every moment.

I cycled down to the local beach, Gilleleje Strand, and foraged some Strandrose and Rose Hips to adorn a summer table. Carefully working around the thorns with a trusty pair of gardening gloves, I gathered the blooms and bright red fruits, each one adding a pop of colour and character. The effort felt completely worth it, as the natural, seaside-inspired arrangement brought a cosy, summery touch to the table - soft, airy greens intertwined with the vibrant pinks and reds, perfectly capturing the relaxed, hygge mood of a summer by the sea.

In the garden at our summer house, we have some lovely recurrent bushes, and last year I picked stems and berries from them to create the centrepieces for our tablescape. I paired the arrangement with the perfect red currant pavlova for pudding, making it a full, sensory experience - surrounded by homegrown goodness, the vibrant colours of the garden, and the warm, comforting rhythms of family hygge. Every element, from the flowers to the dessert, felt connected and intentional, celebrating the simple joys of time spent together in a space that feels both familiar and special.
