AUTUMN COMFORT : EMBRACING HYGGE WITH COSY MOMENTS
As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s nothing more comforting than curling up with a cozy blanket, wrapped in the soft warmth of it all. Autumn has this beautiful way of inviting us to slow down, to savor the simple pleasures. The glow of a candle flickers gently in the corner, casting a soft light as you settle in with a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate. The world outside may be turning colder, but inside, the atmosphere feels perfectly hyggelig, full of warmth, comfort, and a sense of calm.
It’s the season for thick knits, woolen socks, and the softest throws, perfect for cuddling up with a good book or sharing quiet moments with loved ones. The soft rustle of leaves outside only adds to the feeling of contentment. There’s no rush, no agenda, just a chance to breathe, relax, and enjoy the cosy embrace of home. In these moments, it’s easy to see how hygge isn’t just about a feeling, it’s a way of being, of taking time to embrace comfort and enjoy life’s simplest joys.
A WALK IN THE WOODS
There’s something so invigorating about taking brisk walks in the woods during autumn, the crunch of fallen leaves beneath your feet and the fresh, crisp air filling your lungs. Growing up, I remember the walks through the Danish forests during half-term visits to family. The trees seemed to glow with a symphony of colors, deep reds, golden yellows, and rich browns, that made the forest feel like a painting come to life. Every step was an invitation to pause, breathe, and take in the beauty of the changing season.
The earthy smell of moss, the rustle of leaves in the wind, and the vibrant colors of the trees brought such a sense of peace. It was a simple pleasure, yet one that always stayed with me, reminding me of the calm that nature offers. Now, living in Austria, I still find that same joy in the woods near us, as the season transforms the landscape into a patchwork of autumn hues. There’s a certain magic in the quiet of the forest, in the beauty of the colors, and in the feeling of connection to the world around me. Whether in Denmark, England or Austria, these walks always remind me to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the small, perfect moments that nature gives us.
PUMPKIN CARVING & BIRTHDAY TRADITIONS
As the crisp autumn air sets in and the days grow shorter, there’s a special kind of magic in decorating for the season. I love filling the house with warm, autumnal colors, deep oranges, rich reds, and golden yellows, and the scent of cinnamon and cloves that seems to linger in the air. One of my favorite traditions is pumpkin carving. There’s something so satisfying about selecting the perfect pumpkin, carving out the design, and placing a flickering candle inside, watching it cast a soft glow as the night falls.
But what makes Halloween even more meaningful for me is that it’s also my mum’s birthday. Growing up, it was always a double celebration, carving pumpkins in the afternoon and then gathering for a cozy birthday dinner as the evening unfolded. The pumpkins would line the front steps, their faces lit up with the glow of candlelight, and we’d share stories and laughter, surrounded by the warmth of family. It’s a tradition I carry on now, adding that extra layer of joy to the autumn season and making it feel even more special.
APPLE CRUMLE & FAMILY MEMORIES
There’s something so comforting about baking apple crumble (my favourite pudding) on a crisp autumn day, especially when the apples are picked from the old Bramley apple tree in our childhood home. The apples, with their perfect balance of sweetness and tartness, have always been the base of the most delicious crumbles. Over the years, I’ve always added freshly picked blackberries, gathered from the hedgerows or fields. The feeling of wandering through the countryside, basket in hand, and gathering those plump, juicy berries makes this recipe feel even more special, a true celebration of the season.
There’s nothing quite like the first bite of apple and blackberry crumble straight out of the oven, the warmth of the fruit filling the air with a sweet, comforting aroma, subtly spiced with cinnamon. The topping, golden and crisp, contrasts perfectly with the tender apples and juicy blackberries beneath. As if that weren’t indulgent enough, I always serve it with a generous pour of creamy custard. The custard, slightly sweet and velvety, seeps into every crumb, creating the perfect balance of flavors and textures. It’s a moment of pure bliss, sitting down with a bowl, spoon in hand, and savoring every bite while the house feels warm and cozy, the autumn chill forgotten for a little while.
APPLE & BLACKBERRY CRUMBLE RECIPE
4-5 medium-sized apples (my biased preference is Bramley apples)
150g (roughly) fresh blackberries
100g sugar (or more depending on sweetness of apples)
1 tsp ground cinnamon (I often do more)
100g cold butter, cubed
150g all-purpose flour
100g rolled oats
75g brown sugar (for topping)
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Prepare the filling: Peel, core, and slice the apples. Toss them with the sugar, and cinnamon, then place them in a baking dish. Gently fold in the blackberries.
Make the crumble topping: In a bowl, rub the cold butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats and brown sugar.
Assemble the crumble: Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit. Add a little cinnamon and sugar to the top.
Bake: Place the crumble in the oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the fruit is tender.
Serve: Let it cool slightly and serve warm with custard or vanilla ice cream. xxx
