EMBRACING HYGGE DURING CHRISTMAS

Winter, and especially Christmas, is perhaps one of my favorite times of the year. The season is filled with the warmth of hygge, comfort, togetherness, and joy. There’s something incredibly special about the chill in the air, the twinkling lights, and the opportunity to gather with loved ones. It’s a time when everything slows down, and we can embrace the small, meaningful moments that make the season feel magical.

One of my favorite traditions is decorating for Christmas. Growing up with Danish family traditions, the Christmas tree has always been at the heart of our celebrations. Every year, we’d gather together on Christmas Eve to carefully light the candles on the tree, their soft glow filling the room with warmth. As the candles flickered, we’d sing Christmas carols and enjoy each other’s company. That feeling of anticipation, the soft light, and the love surrounding the tree always filled me with a deep sense of comfort and joy.

Another tradition that brings so much hygge into our Christmas is the almond prize game. We’d gather around the table to enjoy apple pie for dessert, and the fun came with the challenge of finding the hidden almond inside the pie. The person who found it would win a small prize, adding a playful touch to our meal (it was often a game to play together). These little moments, combined with delicious food, laughter, and family, create the perfect atmosphere of coziness and connection. It’s these simple, heartfelt traditions that fill me with the true spirit of Christmas and make this season, without a doubt, one of my absolute favorites.

WREATH MAKING WITH FRIENDS

One of my favorite hygge activities during the winter months is gathering with friends to create something beautiful together, our very own wreaths. There’s something incredibly special about spending the day with loved ones, surrounded by the scent of pine, eucalyptus, and cinnamon, as we craft something unique for our homes. Each wreath we create is an expression of the season’s warmth and natural beauty, filled with greenery, dried flowers, and little festive touches like berries or rich velvet ribbons.

What I love most is how personal the process feels. Everyone brings their own flair to their wreath, some may prefer a more traditional look, while others lean into a modern aesthetic, and some might even include flowers inspired by floral designs. It’s these moments of creativity, laughter, and shared joy that truly embody the essence of hygge. The act of making something by hand with friends not only fills the space with warmth but also creates lasting memories to carry into the season.

For me, wreath-making is a perfect reflection of the inspiration behind my floral designs, blending natural elements and creativity to create something meaningful.
